Understanding Family-Based Visas

Bringing family members to the U.S. is a dream for many immigrants. Family-based visas allow U.S. citizens and permanent residents to sponsor relatives for legal residency.

There are two main types of family-based visas. Immediate Relative Visas (IR) are for spouses, parents, and unmarried children under 21 of U.S. citizens. Family Preference Visas (F) apply to extended family members, such as siblings and adult children.

The process starts with filing a petition (Form I-130) with USCIS. Once approved, the applicant goes through background checks and an interview. Processing times vary, but immediate relatives often get faster approvals.

Common challenges include delays and visa denials. A well-prepared application can help avoid these issues. Working with an immigration lawyer increases the chances of success.

At Encheva Law, we guide families through every step, making the process as smooth as possible.
